Energy
Energy is a necessity for any advanced society. In our city of the future we look towards the energy that powers our sun. The power that warms Earth. If our scientists are able to create sustained fusion our energy problems would be over. If we could fuse hydrogen that would release enormous stores of energy with the only by-product being helium.
In this animation we see a fusion reaction, the bonding of two elements. In this case those elements are deuterium and tritium, both isotopes of hydrogen. Tritium is the only radioactive isotope of hydrogen, consisting of two neutrons, one proton, and has a half life of 12.3 years. Deuterium is made up of only one neutron and one proton. Deuterium is found in naturally occurring sources of hydrogen twenty six times for every million hydrogen atoms. When these two elements are combined, a byproduct of Helium-4 is released. Helium-4 makes up 99% of the naturally occurring helium on earth and is not radioactive or dangerous in any way. The heat released from the fusion reaction would turn water into steam, which in turn would spin a turbine and produce electricity. That electricity will power our maglev monorail, lighting, as well as any other needs of the citizens of Khepri.
